Essential Oil Brand Reviews: Honest, Independent Comparisons

Essential Oil Brand Reviews: Honest, Independent Comparisons

With so many essential oil brands fighting for your wallet, how do you know which ones actually deliver quality? I’m Ellen Cooper, and over the past eight years I’ve purchased and tested oils from every major brand on the market — spending my own money, not accepting free samples, and never letting affiliate relationships influence my ratings. The result is the most honest set of brand reviews you’ll find anywhere.

The essential oil industry has a transparency problem. Between MLM companies making bold health claims and budget brands cutting corners on purity testing, it’s hard to know who to trust. That’s where AromaTalking comes in. I evaluate each brand on the things that actually matter: oil purity, sourcing ethics, third-party testing, pricing fairness, product range, and customer experience. No brand gets a pass, and no brand gets unfairly penalized.

This page serves as your central hub for all of our brand reviews. Whether you’re choosing your very first brand or considering switching from one you’ve outgrown, the guides below will help you make an informed decision. Our Review Process

Every brand review on AromaTalking follows the same rigorous process. I purchase oils at retail price, test them over several weeks of daily use, compare scent profiles to reference standards, review available GC/MS testing documentation, evaluate packaging and shelf life, and calculate true cost-per-milliliter value. I also factor in company practices — how transparent they are about sourcing, whether they make unsupported health claims, and how they handle customer issues. Individual Brand Reviews

Plant Therapy

One of the strongest overall values in the essential oil market. Plant Therapy offers an extensive catalog, publishes GC/MS test results for every batch, and prices their oils competitively. Their KidSafe line is particularly popular with parents. A non-MLM brand that sells direct to consumers.

doTERRA

The largest MLM essential oil company in the world. doTERRA’s Certified Pure Tested Grade oils are generally high quality, but the multi-level marketing model means you’re paying a significant premium — often two to three times what comparable non-MLM brands charge for the same oils.

Young Living

The original MLM essential oil company, founded in 1993. Young Living owns several farms and distilleries, giving them supply chain control that few competitors can match. Like doTERRA, their pricing reflects the MLM distribution model rather than the production cost of the oils.

NOW Foods

A well-established supplement company that also produces a solid line of essential oils. NOW Foods oils are widely available in retail stores, affordably priced, and backed by the company’s decades of quality control experience. A no-frills option for budget-conscious buyers.

Edens Garden

A direct-to-consumer brand with an impressive selection of single oils and blends. Edens Garden provides GC/MS reports, prices competitively, and has built a loyal following. Their OK For Kids line competes directly with Plant Therapy’s KidSafe range.

Rocky Mountain Oils

Known for exceptional transparency, Rocky Mountain Oils makes GC/MS test results easy to access and offers a 90-day satisfaction guarantee. They carry a curated selection rather than an overwhelming catalog, and their quality control is consistently strong.

MLM vs. Non-MLM Brands: What You Should Know

One of the biggest decisions in choosing an essential oil brand is whether to buy from an MLM (multi-level marketing) company or a traditional retail brand. Here’s what matters:

  • Price: MLM brands like doTERRA and Young Living are typically 2 to 3 times more expensive than comparable non-MLM brands. The higher price funds the distributor commission structure, not better oil quality.
  • Quality: Both MLM and non-MLM brands can produce excellent oils. Purity depends on sourcing and testing practices, not the business model.
  • Convenience: Non-MLM brands sell directly through their websites and major retailers. MLM brands require purchasing through a distributor or enrolling as a member for the best pricing.
  • Claims: MLM distributors sometimes make health claims that go beyond what essential oils can reliably deliver. Always look for evidence-based information regardless of the source.

My recommendation for most people? Start with a reputable non-MLM brand like Plant Therapy, Edens Garden, or Rocky Mountain Oils. You’ll get excellent quality at fair prices without the membership pressure.
